The USA, or just “the US,” stands for the United States of America. It is a large, diverse country mostly in North America. The United States has 50 states and a federal district (Washington, D.C.). It is the third-biggest country in terms of both size and population. People know the country for its rich history, wide range of cultures, and strong economy.
The Past
The United States has a long and complicated history. In the beginning, there were native people who lived on the land long before Europeans did. Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas in 1492, which led to more exploration and settlement by Europeans. In 1607, the first permanent English settlement was built in Jamestown, Virginia. This was the start of English colonization.
